Complete Umrah Guide

العمرة
The Lesser Pilgrimage — A Complete Step-by-Step Guide

What is Umrah?

Umrah is a pilgrimage to Mecca that can be performed at any time of the year, unlike Hajj which has specific dates. It is often called the "lesser pilgrimage" but holds immense spiritual significance.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The performers of Hajj and Umrah are deputations of Allah. If they call Him, He answers them and if they seek His forgiveness, He forgives them."

Spiritual Purification

Cleanse your soul and seek forgiveness from Allah through sincere worship and devotion.

Flexible Timing

Perform Umrah at any time of the year, making it accessible for pilgrims worldwide.

Great Rewards

Earn immense blessings and rewards from Allah for your sincere efforts and devotion.

The Four Arkan (Pillars) of Umrah

These are the four essential rituals that must be performed in order for a valid Umrah. Each step has deep spiritual significance and must be completed with proper intention and devotion.

1

Ihram

الإحرام
The sacred state of purity and intention

Entering the state of Ihram by wearing the prescribed clothing and making the intention (Niyyah) for Umrah. Men wear two white seamless cloths (Izar and Rida), women wear modest clothing covering the entire body except face and hands.

Ihram Restrictions

No cutting hair/nails, no perfume, no sexual relations, no hunting, no arguing

Spiritual Significance

Represents equality before Allah, spiritual purification, and the beginning of the sacred journey

2

Tawaf

الطواف
Circumambulation around the Holy Kaaba

Performing seven complete rounds around the Kaaba in a counter-clockwise direction, starting and ending at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad). Each round should be done with devotion and remembrance of Allah.

Steps to Follow

Start at Black Stone, make intention, perform 7 rounds, pray 2 Rakah at Maqam Ibrahim

Spiritual Significance

Symbolizes the unity of believers in worship of Allah and follows the tradition of Prophet Ibrahim (AS)

3

Sa'i

السعي
Walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah

Walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, starting at Safa and ending at Marwah. This commemorates Hagar's search for water for her son Ishmael (AS) and demonstrates trust in Allah's provision.

Steps to Follow

Start at Safa, walk to Marwah (1 trip), return to Safa (2 trips), continue until 7 trips completed

Spiritual Significance

Remembers the struggle, patience, and ultimate trust in Allah's mercy and provision

4

Halq or Taqsir

الحلق أو التقصير
Shaving or cutting the hair

Men can either shave their heads completely (Halq - preferred) or trim their hair (Taqsir). Women should only cut a small portion of their hair (about fingertip length). This marks the completion of Umrah.

Spiritual Significance

Symbolizes rebirth, humility, renewal of faith, and the successful completion of the pilgrimage

Note: After this step, all Ihram restrictions are lifted and normal activities can be resumed.

Important Reminder

All four Arkan must be completed in the correct order for a valid Umrah. The sequence is: Ihram → Tawaf → Sa'i → Halq/Taqsir

"And complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah" - Quran 2:196
