Understanding Hajj
Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and a sacred journey that every Muslim must undertake at least once in their lifetime if they are physically and financially able.
What is Hajj?
Hajj is an annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the holiest city for Muslims. It is a mandatory religious duty for Muslims that must be carried out at least once in their lifetime by all adult Muslims who are physically and financially capable of undertaking the journey. The pilgrimage occurs from the 8th to 12th (or in some cases 13th) of Dhu al-Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar. The word Hajj means "to attend a journey", which connotes both the outward act of a journey and the inward act of intentions.

The Five Arkan (Pillars) of Hajj
These are the five essential rituals that must be performed for a valid Hajj. Each has deep spiritual significance and historical importance.
Ihram
الإحرامThe sacred state of purity and intention
Entering the state of Ihram by wearing the prescribed clothing and making the intention (Niyyah) for Hajj. Men wear two white seamless cloths, women wear modest clothing covering everything except face and hands.
Represents equality before Allah — rich and poor, king and commoner all stand equal — and symbolises spiritual purification.
Wuquf at Arafat
الوقوف بعرفةStanding at the plain of Arafat
Standing at Arafat from noon until sunset on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, engaging in prayer, supplication, and remembrance of Allah. This is the single most important ritual of the entire Hajj.
"Hajj is Arafat" — as stated by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Missing this nullifies the entire Hajj.
Tawaf al-Ifadah
طواف الإفاضةCircumambulation of the Kaaba
Performing seven rounds (counter-clockwise) around the Holy Kaaba after returning from Arafat and Muzdalifah. Usually performed on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah after the stoning and sacrifice.
Symbolises the unity of all believers in the worship of the One God, circling the House of Allah.
Sa'i
السعيWalking between Safa and Marwah
Walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah (starting at Safa, ending at Marwah), commemorating Hajar's (AS) desperate search for water for her infant son Ishmael (AS).
Commemorates unwavering trust and reliance on Allah's provision in moments of greatest need.
Halq or Taqsir
الحلق أو التقصيرShaving or cutting the hair
Men shave their heads completely (Halq — preferred) or trim their hair significantly (Taqsir). Women cut only a small portion of their hair (approximately a fingertip's length).
Symbolises rebirth, humility, and the shedding of past sins — a new beginning after the sacred journey.
Important Note
All five Arkan must be completed for a valid Hajj. Missing any of these essential rituals would require compensation (Dam — slaughtering an animal) or in some cases repeating the Hajj in the following year. Consult a qualified scholar if you are unsure.
